Hey, I’m April
Rest hasn't always been on my radar. I've had a smorgasbord of activities to 'unwind'; surfing, hiking, hanging out with friends, watching TV, reading, eating. But on the road to burnout, feeling constantly tired, struggling to make decisions, and irritable, none of these things cut the mustard. I found myself longing for deep conscious rest.
I was introduced to rest in the form of Restorative yoga when I was teaching and managing the Jivamukti Yoga School in Sydney. Back then, Restorative yoga was a class I would take as a student if I was feeling tired. It was a 'treat', not an essential part of life. However, finding myself close to fried, I needed to do something radical; I needed to do nothing.
N O T H I N G.
All the feelings that arise about doing 'nothing' in a world that wants us to do and be everything. Woah, that's an adjustment.
But hearing the call of my Restorative yoga teacher in Sydney, I decided to do hard things gently. And true to the magic of rest, I began to untangle myself and reconnect with my intuition. Rest was a soft landing that allowed me to see my conditioning, and that I was walking a path that I hadn't consciously chosen. It was clear and calm.
The clarity and contentment that comes with rest is one of the many reasons I am passionate about Restorative yoga. I believe that deep conscious rest is the best gift you can give yourself and the planet. Whilst science has captured the physiological benefits of rest, no words capture the feeling.
